Dr George Giannakopoulos started his journey in ICT more than 20 years ago, a journey that led him to a PhD on Artificial Intelligence in 2009. 17 years later, he is still an AI enthusiast, but also realist, bringing AI to society through two avenues: the research environment of NCSR “Demokritos”, the biggest natural sciences public research center in Greece, but also through SciFY, an ICT not-for-profit company bringing change through sharing scientific outputs and knowledge. George has co-designed and co-implemented numerous methods and systems on natural language processing, data mining, bioinformatics, text mining and classification, summarization, personalization, and other domains. He contributes to the ahedd DIH of NCSR “Demokritos”, two MSc programmes, the National Sectoral Council on AI and Data Policy and other initiatives regarding AI democratisation in action. He has also given public talks and seminars on AI in more than 50 occassions, reaching out to interdisciplinary audiences covering: students, researchers, industry experts and innovation experts, as well as the general public. He is also the author of the first Greek (technically grounded but fully understandable) AI book aimed at the wider public, titled “AI: a subtle demystification” (Greek title: “Τεχνητή νοημοσύνη: μια διακριτική απομυθοποίηση”).
