Marcus S. Murbach

Principal Investigator, NASA Ames Research Center

Marc is a research engineer at the NASA Ames Research Center. He is the Principal Investigator/ Project Manager of the SOAREX sub-orbital and TechEdSat-n/NOW! (Nano-Orbital Workshop) orbital flight research series.

TES-n/NOW #13 is being readied for the next Virgin Orbit launch in December – with 4 flight experiments planned in the next 12 months. The TES-13 is novel in that the primary payload is an AI/Machine Learning module, based on the Intel Loihi – making this the first space flight of a neuromorphic processor. The series has achieved a number of ‘firsts’ in the nano-satellite community, with innovations from manufacturing to communications. In addition, a novel drag devices/experiments using sub-orbital and orbital platforms for a number of years have been performed in order to advance Entry/Descent/Landing technologies. The exo-brake, in particular, is a drag device which can be modified with uplink commands. In the future, it is intended to use the AI/ML learning algorithms to enable autonomous targeting for the re-entry point. The TES-n team has been comprised of a with a fine team of young professionals, students and Co-Investigators (as Dr Papadopoulos).

Marc has been an adjunct professor at San Jose State University, and more recently Stanford University.
