EDUCATION
Dr. Sofoklis Sotiriou holds a PhD in High Energy Astrophysics (University of Athens, Greece) and a PhD in the Use of Advanced Technologies in Science Education (University of Bayreuth, Germany).

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
He has worked at CERN (1992-1996), at the National Center for Scientific Research “DEMOKRITOS” in Athens and in the Physics Laboratory of Athens University (1996-1998). He is the Head of R&D Department of Ellinogermaniki Agogi (since 1998), one of the biggest schools in Greece, where has been active in the coordination and development of research projects on implementation of advanced technologies (e.g., mobile applications, wearable computers, VR and AR applications, robotics, AI) in science education and training. He is a member of the European Academy of Sciences (since 2003), member of the board of ECSITE (2004-2007) and has served as Expert Evaluator to the European Commission FP5 & FP6 Programmes. He has also acted as a consultant to the development of the FP7’s Science in Society Work programme.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
He is qualified Science Teacher and Science Teachers Trainer. He is the author of the Science Textbooks that are used in all primary Greek schools since 2003. Since 2002 he is the Director of the Ellinogermaniki Agogi Center for Teachers Training. The Center–that offers courses both with physical presence and online-is certified by the Ministry of Education to deliver courses focusing on educational design and digital resources development. His expertise is in the design of resources that promote inquiry-based teaching and introduce the scientific methodology in the school practice.

AWARDS, DISTINCTIONS, FELLOWSHIPS
In 2011 he received the European Physical Society Outreach Award for his work on the development of resources that are promoting Astronomy and High Energy Physics Research in European Schools. In the framework of the recent EU HORIZON project Stories of Tomorrow, his work in the design of AR ebooks has been characterized as Major Innovation in the field of Education.

RESEARCH INTERESTS
His main research field is the design, application, and evaluation of virtual and digital media environments that could bridge the gap between formal and informal science learning. He has coordinated a long series of EU joint research and technology funded projects. The R&D Department of Ellinogermaniki Agogi has coordinated more than 200 EU funded projects the last 20 years. He has 152 publications with more than 1800 references to his work (h-index 19).
