Dr Xenia Ziouvelou

Dr Ziouvelou is currently the co-chair of the AI Focus Group of the European DIGITAL SME Alliance, the largest network of ICT small and medium enterprises in Europe. She is an Innovation Officer and an Associate Researcher at the Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications (IIT) at NCSR “Demokritos” (Greece) and a visiting academic at the Business School of the University of Southampton (UK). Xenia acts as an external innovation expert for the European Commission as well as for the Italian Ministry of Universities and Research. She is a Sectorial Committee Member on Data and AI Policy, at the National Council for Research, Technology & Innovation in Greece and a member of the Scientific Committee on AI for Insurance of the AI4People (Atomium – European Institute for Science, Media and Democracy).
Xenia holds a PhD in Internet Economics and Strategy, an MSc in International Business, both from the Department of Economics of the Management School of Lancaster University (UK). She has a long working experience as a senior research scientist, lecturer, technology transfer and innovation officer in research and education institutions in the UK and in Greece. She has worked as a research scientist and innovation manager in numerous research and industrial projects covering diverse thematic areas in the context of innovation and technological evolution across various industrial sectors.
Her principal research interests lie in the intersection of computer science, innovation, strategy and policy, focusing on innovation in technology-advanced ecosystems. Supporting the democratization of AI in a sustainable way, Xenia’s research aims at addressing imbalances and ensuring a human-and value-centric-by-design approach to AI-driven innovation for economic and social growth and environmental sustainability.
